‘The Love Hypothesis’ Cast Guide: Who’s Who in the New Prime Video Romance?

What is love without a little chemistry? Well, The Love Hypothesis might take this a little literally.

The new Prime Video film adaptation of Ali Hazelwood’s 2021 bestseller brings the beloved romance to the small screen, which sees Olive (Lili Reinhart), a Ph.D candidate, and Dr. Adam Carlsen (Tom Bateman), a professor, try out an unorthodox experiment outside of the lab: fake dating each other. Both Olive and Adam have their own reasons for engaging in this ruse, but the results might be a tad more complicated than they thought they would be.

DECIDER contributor Maddy Casale recommended people STREAM IT in our The Love Hypothesis review, writing, “The Love Hypothesis might not be a romance for the ages, but it is a charmingly cheesy tale complete with classic tropes like found family and fake dating, resulting in a decently entertaining and pleasant final product.”

1. Lili Reinhart as Olive Smith

   Lili Reinhart stars as Olive Smith, a Ph.D candidate at Stanford University. After discovering that her best friend Anh has feelings for her crush, Jeremy—and that the feelings are mutual—she plants one on the first man she sees in front of Anh to convince her that she’s moved on and in a relationship. However, the man she kisses is none other than Dr. Adam Carlsen. Not only does Reinhart star in the film, but she is also an executive producer.

2. Tom Bateman as Dr. Adam Carlsen

   Tom Bateman plays Dr. Adam Carlson, a professor at Stanford University referred to as “Dr. Evil” by his students for his tough and rather cold demeanor. He decides to engage in a fake-dating ruse with Olive in order to help convince his colleagues that he has a reason to stay at Stanford, as opposed to taking a job offer at Harvard.

   Bateman—who might resemble fellow actor Tom Ellis to some— has earned film credits in projects like Much Ado About Nothing, Snatched, Death on the Nile, Thirteen Lives, and Hedda.

3. Rachel Marsh as Anh Pham

   Anh (played by Rachel Marsh) is Olive’s confident and compassionate best friend at Stanford, who becomes a tremendous support system for her. However, when Anh and Jeremy confess their feelings for each other, she holds back out of respect for Olive.

4. Nicholas Duvernay as Jeremy Langley

   Nicholas Duvernay plays Jeremy Langley, another Ph.D candidate who immediately catches Olive’s eye. However, he is interested in her best friend, Anh.

5. Jaboukie Young-White as Malcolm Browne

   Malcolm (played by Jaboukie Young-White) is Olive’s friend and roommate, who as a student of Dr. Adam Carlsen, is not a fan of him.

   Young-White is a comedian and actor, who outside of The Love Hypothesis, most recently appeared the movie Trash Mountain, which is set to hit theaters in October. He has also earned credits on TV shows such as BoJack Horseman, Fairfax, Only Murders in the Building, and Abbott Elementary.

6. Arty Froushan as Dr. Thomas Benton

   Dr. Thomas Benton (Arty Froushan) is a Harvard professor, whose lab Olive applies to work in who also went to grad school with Dr. Adam Carlsen.
