Romance lovers, this is not a drill: The movie adaptation of The Love Hypothesis is here, and it’s streaming right now on Amazon Prime Video.

The Love Hypothesis movie is based on the 2021 romance novel of the same name, written by Ali Hazelwood, and originally published as a Star Wars fanfiction in 2018. The movie was adapted by screenwriter Sarah Rothschild, and directed by Claire Scanlon (Set It Up, The People We Hate at the Wedding). Lili Reinhart stars as Olive Smith, a PhD student studying at Stanford University who finds herself in a fake dating situation-ship with the “evil” professor at the university, Dr. Adam Caslsen (played by British actor Tom Bateman).

The Love Hypothesis cast also includes Rachel Marsh, Jaboukie Young-White, Nicholas Duvernay, and Arty Froushan. Most of the movie takes place in an academic setting, at Stanford, the prestigious research university in California. It makes sense, then, that The Love Hypothesis was filmed, at least partially, at a real university. Actually, the movie was filmed at several academic institutions, but none of them were the real Stanford. Read on to learn more about The Love Hypothesis filming locations.

Where was The Love Hypothesis movie filmed?

The Love Hypothesis movie was filmed on location in Montreal, Canada and the surrounding area. Filming took place for two months in July and August 2025.

According to the IMDB production page, many of the “Stanford” scenes were filmed at Concordia University, a real university in Montreal that stood in for Stanford. A little Reddit sleuthing reveals that the production filmed lab scenes at science labs on Concordia’s Loyola Campus. Star Lili Reinhart shared a selfie in one of the labs.

Other Redditors revealed that other Stanford scenes were shot at John Abbott, a small college in Montreal, as well as some exteriors at McGill’s Macdonald campus.

According to director Claire Scanlon, the production also did a day at one California university, California Institute of Technology, for some verisimilitude.

“I really felt strongly that this should be a grounded, very lived-in world; that it’s not an anomaly,” Scanlon told The Hollywood Reporter. “That it felt like Stanford. It was shot in Montreal. We did a day in Caltech, which I really think helped.”
