Fresh opportunity to catch up with our technical progress and community building with the COSMIIC System, a fully implantable and fully open-source research platform for neuromodulation. Chris Rexroth will be covering the product offering, how the community is using the system now, and where we're going for making it easier to obtain the device and learn how to use it. Together with Openwater, this month's Show & Tell will cover invasive and non-invasive neuromodulation device approaches that are rethinking how medical device development is conducted. What have I been busy with lately ? I’m working on different projects all related to autonomy in to reinvent healthcare and manufacturing. I have been working on : 1. Breeze Medical : Making myofunctional therapy more accessible, observable and fun for patients and healthcare professionals. More to come there, thanks a lot Madalina L. 2. Maps of Making : Building a new way to think about knowledge sharing in fablabs & makerspace networks and building towards distributed manufacturing, with Nicolas de Barquin 3. FixMyMedtech : Building a community of biomedical engineers to facilitate technical diagnostic, maintenance and procurement of medical devices starting in Africa with Claude Mbiami njanang, Teresa B., Fayçal Kami, Emmanuel Tagne, Olivier WATRIN, Alex Rosen and many more. Beyond that, I invested a lot of time working in Superlab, an industrial makerspace in Brussels to create the place I dream of working in: a vibrant place full of imaginative, practical, competent artists and engineers inventing and building the future we want to see happen. And beyond that I took the time to participate to different conferences with Andrew Lamb and Nathan Parker of the Internet of Production Alliance and Open Source Hardware Association in Berlin and San Francisco ! BioClub Tokyo joined an international study on validating open source medical devices, at the invitation of the Open Source Hardware Association (OSHWA) where they contributed a local sourcing test. The study centers on the tourniquet designed by Glia Equal Care, creators of the Glia tourniquet a device originally developed for use in Gaza in 2017 by Tarek Loubani, and since deployed in Ukraine and Myanmar. The Open Source Hardware Association is building a documentation-based certification framework around medical and health related devices like it, so that a design proven in one place can be trusted and rebuilt in another.

🌟Neue Veröffentlichung: Produkthaftungsrecht und Open-Source-Hardware 🔍 Was bedeutet das neue Produkthaftungsrecht für Open-Source-Hardware? 📚 Dieser Frage gehen Tarmio Frei, Greta Sparzynski und Clara Twehues in ihrem Beitrag „Produkthaftungsrecht und Open-Source-Hardware“ nach, der kürzlich in CR 2026, 489 erschienen ist. ⚖️ Im Mittelpunkt steht die neue Produkthaftungsrichtlinie (EU) 2024/2853 und ihre geplante Umsetzung in Deutschland – insbesondere die Frage, wann digitale Designvorlagen als „digitale Konstruktionsunterlagen“ in den Anwendungsbereich der Produkthaftung fallen. 🔧 Die Autor*innen plädieren für eine technisch fundierte Differenzierung: Haftungsrelevant sind grundsätzlich erst funktionale, gerätespezifische Ansteuerungsdateien, etwa G-Code, nicht dagegen bloße CAD-Dateien oder 3D-Modelle. 🛡️ Darüber hinaus beleuchtet der Beitrag die Rolle von Sicherheitskommunikation, Dokumentation und der Nutzergruppe für die Bestimmung der erwartbaren Sicherheit. 🏛️ Die Veröffentlichung ist Teil des interdisziplinären Forschungsprojekts Fab City am Bucerius IP Center der Bucerius Law School.
