Your maps app has never once asked if the street it picked is safe to bike on. Aggie Street Smart is a hackathon project by Patrick Liu, Bardia Anvari, Benedict N., and Katherine Liu that flips the priority. Instead of optimizing for the fastest line, it scores every segment of a route for risk and quietly steers you toward the safer one, even when that costs a few extra minutes. Here's what's under the hood: Route segments get color-coded green, orange, or red. A vision model analyzes street view frames and tags what it sees: lighting quality, foot traffic, visible hazards. Weather, live traffic speeds, dangerous intersections, and crime data from the surrounding area feed into a composite score layered on top of Mapbox routing, with Google Gemini powering the analysis and server-sent events streaming results into the UI so nothing blocks the map. The team started here because of near misses on their own commutes: dim streets, unprotected turns, riders getting hit. What they found while building was that a town celebrated for cycling still has blind spots designed right into its roads. That's a wrap on Hackcon 2026! 🏕️ Last weekend, 300+ hackathon organizers and campus tech leaders swapped their laptops for the woods of upstate New York. For two days at Camp Pontiac, organizers from communities across the country and around the world shared what actually works: how to build a community that outlasts a single event, how to run logistics that don't fall apart at 3am, and how to design a hacker experience people still talk about years later. The talks were excellent, but our favorite part was the people. Thank you to everyone who made the trip, to our speakers for sharing hard-won lessons instead of highlight reels, and to the sponsors who have backed this community since the earliest days. A hardware crypto wallet usually costs around $150. This team built one on an Arduino Uno in 36 hours. Meet cryptX, a hackathon project from Rahul Balasubramanian, Navin Narayanan, Sakthi Sadayappan, and Akshat Goyal. The name comes from a cryptex, the portable puzzle box built to guard secrets, which is exactly what this device does for your Solana keys. The team reverse-engineered the Ledger Nano S to understand how private keys stay isolated, then rebuilt that trust boundary themselves. Users create a 6-digit PIN, back up a BIP-39 seed phrase displayed word by word on a small LCD, and physically confirm every signing request with two buttons before a transaction ever reaches the chain. Challenge-response authentication using SipHash-2-4 ties the device identity to the physical silicon it runs on. The part that makes it feel like a product, though, is the security layer. A Google Gemini agent monitors every connection, PIN attempt, and transaction event, turning raw device logs into real risk assessments. Repeated auth failures or a mid-transaction disconnect gets the device blacklisted automatically. All of it surfaces in a live Next.js dashboard alongside on-chain balances and transaction history.
