Welcome to the English-language Wiktionary, a collaborative project to produce a free-content multilingual dictionary. It aims to describe all words of all languages using definitions and descriptions in English.
Wiktionary has grown beyond a standard dictionary and now includes a thesaurus, a rhyme guide, phrase books, language statistics, and extensive appendices. We aim to include not only the definition of a word, but also enough information to really understand it. Thus etymologies, pronunciations, sample quotations, synonyms, antonyms, and translations are included.
Wiktionary is a wiki, which means that you can edit it, and all the content is dual-licensed under both the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International License and the GNU Free Documentation License. Before you contribute, you may wish to read through some of our help pages, and bear in mind that we do things quite differently from other wikis. In particular, we have strict layout conventions and inclusion criteria. Armageddon proper n (Christianity, Islam)
  1. Mount Megiddo, a hill in modern Israel near the kibbutz of Megiddo, which is the site of a prophesized final battle between the forces of good and evil before the Last Judgment.
  2. (by extension) The battle itself.

Armageddon n

  1. A catastrophic or great conflict, especially one regarded as likely to destroy the human race or the world; (loosely) the end of the world.
  2. (by extension, chess, often attributive) A type of chess game, usually played when a match would otherwise end in a draw, where black wins drawn games and white is given more time as compensation.

World War II is generally regarded as having begun on this day in 1939 with the German invasion of Poland, which led to France and the United Kingdom declaring war on Germany two days later.
